Good question. Nothing, of course. But that is the point. A “reciprocal” tariff of 10% imposed on Heard and McDonald, tiny islands home to only penguins and seals, is the giveaway that the world is being subjected to an ignorant, cold-hearted, and hateful power play. It would be funny, except that real (low per capita income) economies (such as Lesotho) who supply goods that will never again be manufactured in the US (aka, affordable clothing) are being quite deliberately blown up by the current White House occupant and his cadre of wealthy sycophants. With total disregard for the lives trashed in the process. This clearly meets the definition of evil: The gross violation of standards of moral conduct.
At this point in time, nothing is more important than to recognize evil for what it is. Whether one inadvertently (or deliberately) voted for it or not. The critical question is when (not whether) the public outcry in the US reaches a level that matters. And what actions will lead to a fix. The first formal target is 2026 mid-terms where voters can return Congress to a centre-left majority. A nearer term target is a major recession and associated mobilization of the American people in the streets. The proximal target is lawmakers breaking with the orange-faced lizard-like individual in the White House, knowingly putting their political futures in jeopardy. Which would take courage, something apparently in rather short supply among politicians.
Were it a happier, perhaps more predictable time. Perhaps much of this will be over sooner than we reasonably hope. And hopefully with only temporary damage sustained across the world while the US grapples with a problem it invited upon itself. And will have to work hard to regain friend and partner status. It is doubtful that the penguins on Heard and McDonald are aware of any of this. We should all be so lucky. In the meantime, we avoid buying American goods. And watch the horror show from afar with trepidation.
